Mindfulness rocks on a beach

“I’m so stressed”! Is this you? Having control over distress can be advantageous to one’s health. When distress happens [job loss, trauma, family trouble] a chain of events occurs called “Flight or Fight”. The body releases adrenaline, breathing and heart rate speed up and blood pressure rises too. Repeated bouts of distress or chronic stress plays havoc on heart and blood vessels talking a toll on the — body, mind and spirit!

“Mindfulness is about being fully awake in our lives. It is about perceiving the exquisite vividness of each moment” – Jon Kabat-Zinn, Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Over the last 35+years there has been a tremendous amount of research and practice that has occurred in traditional and non-traditional medical facilities and places of worship. However, if you ask an individual on the street are you mindful, the puzzled looks confirm for you that they are not familiar with the thought.

So, what is mindfulness really? Mindfulness is about being present in the moment without lens of judgement. Through educational processes, with appropriate tools and resources individuals need to understand and apply their physical, spiritual and mental dimensions to support the practice of mindfulness even when experience flight or fight.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is learning through practice and studying how your body handles (and can resolve) stress neurologically. This online course is a progressive curriculum over eight-weeks and free to all.
